The 50 Best Movies for Guys of All Time

The ultimate collection of movies for men. Whether you’re looking for some movies to watch on your own, maybe on Netflix on a boring night, or a guys night with the crew, these movies are the ones you absolutely must watch.  I also wanted to make a list because we know women heavily search during the holidays for “Best movies to buy my boyfriend/husband” but now they need not look any further. Many of the “movies” are actually series/franchises as well because they’re often great to watch as a collection. For example, obviously I’ve included the “Fast and Furious” movies on the list, but there’s no reason to rank them differently, the franchise itself is great and I ranked them collectively as a group. So, without further ado, here are the 50 best movies for guys. (Each listing will have a brief blurb, no spoilers at all. Descriptions/ranking will naturally get more in depth as you get to my top picks)

blade runna

50. Blade Runner

Blade Runner actually has a sequel coming out soon so there’s no better time than now to check this movie out if you’ve never seen it. Half the people are people and half the people are robots, and the Blade Runner’s need to find the robots. It’s a great standalone sci-fi movie. Update: The new “Blade Runner” movie was just as good as the original. While the original will always be a classic, the new film definitely does it justice.

49. Superbad

“So we have an African Jew wearing a hoodie”

Superbad is one of the funniest comedies ever made. It’s where Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, and Seth Rogen all appeared in a mainstream movie that took off. It was the jumpoff point for all 3 of them so it’s a much watch for all guys. Plus the lines are unreal.

48. Spartacus

I’m going to be doing a similar list like this for TV shows and the Spartacus TV show was brilliant, but this is my favorite “old time” movie. There’s obviously a bunch of older religious films but Spartacus is an older historical film, so in that way was unique. Kirk Douglas is one of the best actor’s who’s ever lived. It’s a great story and for a generation unfamiliar with his work it’s a great way to see him in a film.

47. Wall Street

“If you need a friend, get a dog”

Speaking of the Douglas family, this is Michael (Kirk’s son) Douglas best and most famous movie. It’s also a trip to watch Charlie Sheen in a serious role. This is a fantasy film for many men with the extreme wealth that can be attained through the stock market. The second movie isn’t that bad either. Both are a great watch.

American Gangster

46. American Gangster

“Either you’re a somebody or you ain’t nobody”

Denzel Washington plays a driver who wants to ascend to the rank of mob boss, this is a rough movie to talk about because you don’t want to give anything away but it’s a great movie for a guys night.

A few good men

45. A Few Good Men

One of the most famous lines from any movie comes from “A Few Good Men” With Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson it’s hard to go wrong here.

Dark Knight

44. The Dark Knight Trilogy

“Anyone can be a hero”

Everything about the Dark Knight trilogy is amazing, Liam Neeson in movie one, followed by the Joker and Bane having a Dark Knight night is always a guaranteed good time.

The Matrix

43. The Matrix

“There’s a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path”

The Matrix is one of those movies that I think everyone needs to watch at least once. I think these films though are for more of an individual watching than a group night. Some people get confused or bored, especially by the second movie, but I still think they’re all great films.

42. Caddyshack

“There’s a force in this universe that makes things happen”

Caddyshack is an American classic comedy film with some of the funniest comedians who’ve ever lived. Whether it’s the eccentric antics on the golf course or the chasing of a gopher Caddyshack is all around fun.

41. Taken

“I will find you, and I will kill you”

If at this point you don’t know the entire quote from the line above by heart I don’t know what you’re doing with yourself. All 3 Taken movies are fantastic, obviously none compare to the first, but I’ll take them all any day of the week over any “regular” movie series. I don’t care how similar the plots are, I’d take another Taken movie.

40.  Rambo Franchise

“Livefor nothing, or die for something”

I’ve had Rambo nights with my friends before where we throw all of the movies on. Rocky is found later on in the list, but I personally think Rambo is Stallone’s best movies. The action is out of control especially for older films.

39. Gladiator

Gladiator follows Russell Crowe from commander to slave with a wide myriad of obstacles. Joaquin Phoenix plays on heck of a role too as the King.

38. The Big Lebowski

“That’s just like your opinion, man”

The Big Lebowski is similar to caddy shack in that they’re both American classics comedies, I just so happen to prefer The Dude.

shawshank red

37. Shawshank Redemption

“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing, and good things don’t die”

Shawshank Redemption set the stage for all prison related movies. Friendship, heartache, it’s a masterwork of acting and one of the best movies of all time. I’ve never watched this one with a group but whenever it’s on TV I have to watch it.

36. Anchorman
“I’m kind of a big deal”

The original Anchorman is one of the most quotable movies around. Will Ferrell is hilarious in both movies playing a misogynist and idiotic anchorman that is completely full of himself. Sounds great right? Because it is.

35. Con Air
“Put the bunny back in the box”

Con-Air stars Nicolas Cage who is jailed for an “understandable” crime and finds himself on a plane full of psychotic convicts. Because Cage is actually a “good guy” morally, he finds himself at odds with the rest of the criminals to try and get them back to jail where they belong.

34. Die Hard

“Yippee ki-yay mother f***er”

The movies that made Bruce Willis a badass. I mean, do I need to go further than that?

33. Inglourious Basterds

“We in the Nazi killin business, and business is boomin”

Brutality, blood, humor, action, and a bit of historical accuracy. That about sums this one. Because of that description it’s a great movie for guys and features some truly crazy (and sick) scenes

32. Pulp Fiction

“Does he look like a bitch?”

Bruce Willis, John Travolta, and Samuel Jackson are all in intertwining plots in Pulp Fiction. The “diner scene” is one of the best movie scenes of all time.

tombstone mo

31. Tombstone

“I forgot you were there, you may go now”

Tombstone is great because it’s the most historically accurate film on this list. Nothing can make you feel more manly than watch Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday take on the Cowboys. As well as seeing the battle at the OK Corral come to life.

30. Bourne Movie

“I remember, I remember everything”

Jason Bourne would give Ethan Hunt and James Bond a run for the money when it comes to fighting. Each movie has some pretty intense scenes and all together they’re some pretty great films. With Bourne set to have another go with Damon playing the lead role again I have no doubt this spot will be even more solidified

Dirty G

29. Dirty Harry

“Make my day”

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood legend and when asked to name one of his films, this is almost always the first mentioned, which says something after such an amazing career.

28. Deadpool

“That’s because it’s Christmas day and I’m after someone on my naughty list”

Deadpool is a new movie but the film style is totally different. The breaking of the fourth wall, the action, the comedy, it’s all to a top level. There’s a reason this movie broke records in the super hero genre. I was tempted to move this up even further, but seeing as it just came out this seemed like a good spot.

27. Oceans Movie Franchise

“The moment you become embarrassed of who you are, you lose yourself”

The Oceans movies have some of the best star filled casts around. Brad Pitt and Clooney especially have the best rapport in each of the movies and all 3 make for a perfect movie marathon.

26. Training Day

“It’s not what you know, it’s what you can prove”

Training Day is just a spoilery movie so again, I can’t say much, but it’s a great movie with unexpected plot twists.

25. The Hangover

“But don’t text me, it’s gay”

Aside from Wedding Crashers/Wolf of Wall Street the original Hangover is the 3rd best comedy movie for guys of all time. All 3 Hangover films are funny, but I remember seeing the first in theaters thinking how different it was. From the very beginning with Bradley Cooper’s voicemail you know it’s on.

24. Rocky

“It ain’t how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit”

Rocky is one of those franchises that you can watch over and over again. The best has to Rocky vs Drago and the “I will break you line.” Every guy knows those scenes, the prep montage, and the lines, if you don’t then it’s about time you did.

23. Mission Impossible

“You’ve never seen my very upset”

Ethan Hunt is the only spy in movies that can come close to James Bond. The Mission Impossible films are all awesome and Tom Cruise gets better and better in each.

22. Eastern Promises

“I’m just the driver”

Eastern Promises has one of my favorite fight scenes of all time, it’s up there with the road house fight by the water, and the multiple John Wick scenes. It is not only in the mix with scenes like that for the best fight scene, but may be THE best of all time. It’s that good, and sick. It’s the “sick” part that makes the fight, you can’t believe what you’re watching. On top of that you don’t really expect the twist in the movie either. All around this is a truly great film.

21. Top Gun

“You can be my wingman anytime”

Top Gun is really a bro-friendship movie, if you haven’t played a game of volleyball with your guy friends, then you will after watching this. Really though, that’s not a joke, you feel compelled to do it.

20.‎ Terminator

“I’ll be back”

Starting off the top 20 is one of the best movie franchises ever with Terminator. The movie that put Arnold on the map filled with non-stop action, robots, and time travel. Perfect franchise to catch a marathon of on a Friday night.

19. John Wick

“I’m thinkin I’m back”

Some may say Reeve’s best role is in the Matrix and that Wick is his career revival, but I’d say that’s only half right. I liked his performance in Wick even better than the Matrix, this is truly a role he was born to play. The club scene is my favorite fight scene/fire fight of all time, at least when it comes to a 1 vs many scenario.

18. Fast and Furious

“In those ten seconds or less, I’m free”

The entire Fast and Furious franchise is on another level. I could do an article on ranking these movies alone and it wouldn’t be easy. There are currently 7 movies in the franchise which is an entire days worth of plans, and it would be worth it too. Even the movies without Vin Diesel are good, and 2 Fast 2 Furious is actually in the top 3 for me in the franchise.

17. The Expendables

“You should’ve waited for me, I was worth it”

The Expendables movies are some of the best guy movies because they took numerous actors from a chunk of the movies I’ve already mentioned here. It’s a who’s who of alpha-males in Hollywood, you can’t go wrong when most of the actor’s are taken from a variety of movies on this list.

16. Escape From New York/Los Angeles

“**** you, I’m goin to Hollywood”

Snake Plissken is one of the biggest movie badasses ever. This (along with the next movie) is one of the only “older” movies that doesn’t age a bit.

15. Road House

“Ask him to leave, but be nice”

Like I mentioned in the Eastern Promises blurb, the fight scene in Road House by the water is one of the best hand to hand combat scenes in movie history. The scene where the bear statue falls in the house and there’s a giant fire fight isn’t too shabby either.

14. Raging Bull/Cape Fear/Taxi Driver

“I tell the truth the first time”

Let’s just put some of DeNiro’s movies together here at #14, they’re all classics and I can’t literally make this an entire list of his greatest roles (I’ll save that for another time), so these 3 are all absolutely amazing. I can’t pick between the 3 for which to even watch first. So do yourself a favor and watch them all.

wolf of wall str

13. Wolf of Wall Street

“I call them fun coupons”

Right behind Wedding Crashers (and to some, probably above) this is an all star comedy movie to watch with your friends. It’s a laughter fest the entire way through, but the best part is that it’s based on a true story. When you watch it hysterical laughing and then remind yourself that it actually happened it makes the movie even better. On top of being as funny as Wedding Crasher’s it also mixes in the “Wall Street” flair of wanting to be a part of the stock market to make things happen. It’s the ultimate dream movie.

wedding crash

12. Wedding Crashers

“Tattoo on the lower back? Might as well be a bullseye”

It might seem a bit low, but I felt there needed to be a comedy movie at the top of the list and this movie is the comedy movie for guys. It’s the ultimate movie to get together with the guys and put on, I don’t think any other comedies come close to being enjoyable when with a group.

iron man

11. Iron Man

“Following isn’t really my style”

Iron Man is the only superhero movie I felt belonged this high on the list, the only other hero than Batman I’ve decided to include. The Iron Man movies stand out from The Dark Knight movies in that Tony Stark is basically the main character, he’s more himself than he is in the suit. Batman on the other hand is the opposite. Even when Bruce Wayne is being Bruce Wayne his activities are purely Batman related.

Now, that surely does make him a better super hero. I’m a Batman guy myself, BUT Down Jr.s Stark makes for one awesome badass character who has added dimensions, especially of being a player, which is clearly lacking in the Batman films. Stark also isn’t the kind of guy you can outwit, there’s never any real witty dialogue in the Dark Knight films either. All together that makes these movies a great watch for guys.

10. 300

“Give them nothing, but take from them, everything”

Stylistically this movie was unique in the blood department and lent inspiration to TV shos like Spartacus. The movie was filled with some great lines, but it became one of the top movies for guys quickly because of Gerard Butler’s badass portrayal of King Leonidas, it’s the most badass portrayal of an “ancient character” other than Brad Pitt’s Achilles.

the departed

9. The Departed

“I don’t want to be a product of my environment, I want my environment to be a product of me”

I know what you are and I know what you’re not, and if you haven’t seen this movie then you’re crazy. DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg Baldwin, Sheen. Death all over the place, crazy scenes, crazy plot twists, hilarious lines. This is in the top 10 for a reason and truly deserving of a place here.

8. Troy

“That’s why no one will remember your name”

Brad Pitt as Achilles is hands down one of the most badass character’s of all time. Looking for a legacy, a man who a King is afraid of, a man who the entire army worships. Achilles is just on another levels. The fights are incredible, the acting is incredible, the entire movie is worthy of the title of an “epic.” Plus, Sean Bean is in the movie and that’s always a good thing.

7. James Bond

“The name’s Bond, James Bond”

James Bond has been an inspiration for men for 50 years now. I’ll be ranking the Bond films in the future so this can be further broken down, but in general the James Bond films are all spectacular. Every guy wants to be James Bond, he can fight, he can charm whoever he wants, he’s smart, humorous, I mean the guy is the alpha male. (Check out our “Best of Bond” articles HERE)

fight club

6. Fight Club

“It’s only after we’ve lost everything, we’re free to do anything”

The first rule of Fight Club, is that I can’t talk about Fight Club.

bronx tale

5. A Bronx Tale

“There’s nothing worse than a wasted talent”

Starting the top 5, which is basically a “who’s who” of mobster movies with a cast of familiar characters in all of them. I think the part that makes a Bronx Tale so iconic is the “car” test. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should get this movie on immediately. Actually you should probably go watch this first and if you haven’t seen it then there’s a good chance you haven’t seen the next few either, so lucky you, you’ve got some plans for great movies.

4. Casino

“There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the way I do it”/”I want you to vacate this guy off the premises and I want you to exit him off his feet and use his head to open the ****ing door”

Casino has some of the best lines of the top 5, especially from DeNiro. Very little differentiates the top 5, but the top 2 are on another level. A Bronx Tale, Casino, and Goodfellas could really all be interchangeable depending on the day.

3. Goodfellas

“What do you mean I’m funny? Funny how?”

Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro, that is quite the cast. Other than “The Godfather” this is the top notch mafia related movie. It’s similar to the Godfather in being masterfully done, but it has some extremely humorous scenes too. The scene with “Do I look like a clown to you?” is one of the best all around movie scenes of all time.

2. Scarface
“It’s the eyes Chico, they never lie”

There’s a reason why when you watch an episode of “cribs” almost every well respected man has a Scarface poster, usually along with a Goodfellas one too. These movies are the tops. Tony Montana might go down “getting high on his own supply” but that doesn’t make him any less of a badass. He’s in an entire world of badass guys doing what they can to make it to, and/or stay, at the top of the game. Tony is ballsy as anything and for that reason has become an iconic movie character.

the godfather

1. The Godfather
“I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse”

Like I mentioned initially and mentioned along the way, I’ll be grouping movie franchises together. When it comes to The Godfather I and II are unquestionably the best movies for guys. Even now I can’t decide between them which is the best. Marlon Brando probably needs to put The Godfather over the top, but Robert DeNiro in II is also a legendary performance. I’ve met guys who haven’t watched The Godfather movies before and it literally makes me semi-ill. If you’re one of these men, please get off here immediately and go watch these movies. You’ll be leaving a boy and returning a man. From the directing, to the acting, there’s really nothing that compares to The Godfather movies.

Notable Movies: I also wanted to include the movies I considered but fitting them into the Top 50 was difficult, but they’re still great and iconic as well. Some also wouldn’t qualify as “guy movies” really, especially the first two I’m about to mention: Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, The Patriot, Indiana Jones, The Transporter, Catch me if You Can, The Rock, Heat, Blade Runner, Animal House, The Waterboy, Judge Dredd, and The Punisher. There are tons of great movies and obviously not all can make it into the top, I’d be open to adding a few down here though if there’s an overwhelming movie request in the comments.
